A. Perhaps some more specifics would help...Do you want a specific disaster, a specific type of disaster, and how recent is 'current'? 1st link: Disaster Preparedness kits and commentary about Katrina, being prepared for it and more. 2nd Link: Lots of Katrina and FEMA's response. 3rd & 4th Link: Indonesian tsunami of 2006. 5th Link: Summary page with links from Wikipedia. Hope these help! Orion EDIT: Check the last link - It's about severe storms in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas resulting in one death - last night. Should be current enough.

What are some natural disaster relief plan for earthquakes?
Q. What are some of FEMA plans when it comes to preparing for natural disaster emergencies such as hurricane, tornados and earthquakes. Are they well published in terms of what the plans are depending on the area, the type of disaster, the severity of disaster, etc? Is FEMA well prepared for every type of natural disaster that can happen in the US?

A. There is no part of the U.S. that is immune to some form of natural disasters. The Federal Government cannot be responsible for helping all those that suffer from them. The main responsibility lies with the individuals people. Then comes the local community and then the State. Take today's earthquake in California. In the last couple of years the Governor and Legislature passed laws providing multi-billions of dollars to pay for programs for illegal immigrants, provide health insurance to every California citizen and many other social welfare programs. They could have put that kind of money in a 'rainy day fund' to use to help pay for recovery from earthquakes, fires and other disasters.

In the event of a natural disaster, what would happen to your prescriptions?
Q. If a natural disaster occured, would people be able to get their prescriptions? I take several medications and even though I wouldn't die if I didn't have my medications I would be in a lot of pain. I always wondered if they brought you medication, or if you could go get it in another area not effected by the disaster, or would you just be SOL? Would they provide only to the ones that need the medication to live or would they provide to everyone? Or no one? Does anyone know what happens to people who have prescriptions in this situation?
Asked by DiNoto - Thu Aug 2 00:36:58 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In a disaster situation people with chronic pain would be a low priority. You would not be able to get meds to deal with chronic pain if people were dying around you. I am not trying to minimize your pain issues, but imagine this scenario. One person walks into an ER/pharmacy/whatever, and says, "I feel like I can't breathe", and another person walks in and says, "I've had this back pain for 3 years, and I need a refill". Who would you treat first? Sorry to say this, but as you put it, you would be SOL. This is especially true if you are taking controlled substances to control you pain, as the prescriptions cannot be filled in a different state (i.e. you could not just get away from the disaster to fill your scrip). I'm sorry to tell… [cont.]

Do you prepare in case of a natural disaster?
Q. This evening, I decided I should fill my water jugs just in case of a big earth quake. We had a 5.4 earth quake here 3 days ago and have been having minor aftershocks ever since. They have said midwestern earth quakes are poorly understood. What else should we do to prepare for natural disaster?
Asked by happydawg - Mon Apr 21 23:59:13 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Make sure you have a supply of batteries, flashlights and a portable radio or TV and your cell phone charger. Buy a first aid kit just for true emergencies. Have an evacuation plan who's going to meet where. You should have some non perishable food that you can eat cold. Don't forget a can opener. Collect all important papers and decide whether to take them with you or put them in a safe deposit box Take photos of your belongings for insurance purposes Decide what to do with your pets. Many shelters won't take them. Put some cash aside. There's usually a run on ATM machines. Swap out your emergency supplies at least once a year. If you have some warning, fill your gas tank (if you can afford it) That's hurricane season in FL!

Can anyone name an natural disaster which have occurred which caused data to be destroyed?
Q. E.G The twin tower were destroyed and I'm shore a lot of data was lost but that wasn't a natural disaster
Asked by Arin G - Mon Nov 16 15:06:26 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just about any natural disaster can cause a loss of data: even heavy rain can cause transformers to explode which can cause power surges, which can fry computers. Anything that can physically destroy a structure can cause fires or electrical damage, so that would include pretty much every natural disaster: earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, tornado, avalanche, blizzard, et cetera.

Asked by NAMAN JAIN - Thu Nov 27 13:10:53 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Infrastructure damage - Land line cables (copper, fiber-optic) can be damaged and destroyed, wireless land stations (transmission towers) can collapse, hardware can be damaged or destroyed (telephone switching equipment, RTTY stations. Any communications that might still exist after a disaster could be overwhelmed by the large amount of demand that usually exist after a disaster. Electrical power to run these devices might not be available after a disaster.

A. Floods are fairly common in the rainy season, and last year, a cyclone (Asian hurricane) hit our province. Aside from that, there aren't many natural disasters here. The plate tectonics preclude tsunamis and I have never heard of a tornado in this area. I would guess that there might be forest fires somewhere but I live in the Mekong Delta and we don't have them. What type of natural disaster could occur in Florida that could destroy a few towns and a baseball stadium?
Q. A small stadium (minor league size, 5000 seats). We're wondering if there's a Florida natural disaster that would only devastate 25 miles or less. If so, what's the smallest mileage a natural disaster could destroy, but be strong enough to crumble a stadium?
Asked by Anthony A - Tue May 8 22:35:33 2007 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. A tornado or a wildfire would be most likely. Obviously, a hurricane would affect a MUCH larger area. You really can't put a number on the smallest possible area a disaster could destroy. It's entirely possible for a tornado to touch down, trash the baseball stadium, and then withdraw back into its storm cloud before it touches anything else.

Here's what the Dept of Homeland Security says: * Make a kit - Build an emergency supply kit by considering your family's unique needs, like eye glasses and prescription medications * Have a plan - Create a family plan with a designated meeting place and consider simple steps that will protect your family until you can be with them * Be informed - Learn about the types of emergencies that could take place in your community, including where you live, where you work and where your children attend school o Learn a first aid skill such as CPR, or study up on general first aid practices. A. In case of crisis, the International Monetary Fund is there to help the member countries. The USA being the richest country, contributes with (if I remember correctly!) 17 percent. That is, for example, the part of the Greek financial bailout covered by the IMF that the USA will pay. Has the USA asked for such a help before? I don't know, I am Norwegian. Can the USA ask for such a help in the future? Of course, it is the intention of the Fund! Regarding other forms of help, Norway has three divisions to help you in Afghanistan. Not much but the total Norwegian population is only half that of New York City.
