A. Hurricane Katrina victims often asked "If God is so great, why would he do this to me"? The answer came later as hundreds of thousands of Christian volunteers from around the world, came to help rebuild their homes and businesses. After the flood of volunteers left, they were in awe and saw the blessing. Without Hurricane Katrina, tens of thousands would be much worse off than they were after. Katrina was one of the best things to ever happen to the United States... go figure. And although we mourn the loss of 2000 victims of the storm, we celebrate the overwhelming response by the Christian community in response to our devestating disaster. It was a blessing and God performed miracles thru their actions. Thank you to all those who… [cont.]

A. Perhaps some more specifics would help...Do you want a specific disaster, a specific type of disaster, and how recent is 'current'? 1st link: Disaster Preparedness kits and commentary about Katrina, being prepared for it and more. 2nd Link: Lots of Katrina and FEMA's response. 3rd & 4th Link: Indonesian tsunami of 2006. 5th Link: Summary page with links from Wikipedia. Hope these help! Orion EDIT: Check the last link - It's about severe storms in Texas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas resulting in one death - last night. Should be current enough.

What happens to a prison in a natural disaster?
Q. So I was watching a show about packed prisons. A thought came to my mind, what happens when there is a natural disaster in a prison? Do all the cell blocks come unlocked? Is everyone free? What happens?

A. Our county jail is right on the river, whenever the river floods the prisoners are moved to the higher floors and if nessessary are bussed to neighboring counties for housing until the river goes down, however, I think if it was like an earthquake or something that can't be prepared for it'd be every man for himself until they rounded everyone up

Why are there so many tragic natural disaster happening in Asia?
Q. 2 years ago it was the Tsunami. Last December it was a cyclone in Bangladesh. And now a cyclone in Myanmar and an earthquake on China. Why on Asia all the time. We should be lucky we live in U.S that we don't have that much natural disaster.
Asked by whatever441 - Tue May 13 20:11:33 2008 - - 7 Answers - 0 Comments

A. First of all, it's the largest continent on Earth, therefore we should expect those disasters. Second, the span of the continent, from extremely mountainous regions to tons of coastline, make it vulnerable to all forms of disasters. Thirdly, many countries there lack the engineering resources of countries like the USA, therefore the natural disasters are typically more deadly (compare the recent earthquake in China with 12k+ deaths to earthquakes in California where the death toll is in single digits), thus will be reported to a stronger degree in the media.

In the event of a natural disaster, what would happen to your prescriptions?
Q. If a natural disaster occured, would people be able to get their prescriptions? I take several medications and even though I wouldn't die if I didn't have my medications I would be in a lot of pain. I always wondered if they brought you medication, or if you could go get it in another area not effected by the disaster, or would you just be SOL? Would they provide only to the ones that need the medication to live or would they provide to everyone? Or no one? Does anyone know what happens to people who have prescriptions in this situation?
Asked by DiNoto - Thu Aug 2 00:36:58 2007 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. In a disaster situation people with chronic pain would be a low priority. You would not be able to get meds to deal with chronic pain if people were dying around you. I am not trying to minimize your pain issues, but imagine this scenario. One person walks into an ER/pharmacy/whatever, and says, "I feel like I can't breathe", and another person walks in and says, "I've had this back pain for 3 years, and I need a refill". Who would you treat first? Sorry to say this, but as you put it, you would be SOL. This is especially true if you are taking controlled substances to control you pain, as the prescriptions cannot be filled in a different state (i.e. you could not just get away from the disaster to fill your scrip). I'm sorry to tell… [cont.]

A. Depends what you consider 'the world'... A Mars size rock impacted the early earth, split off debris which became the moon, and formed the planet into the size it is now. If you count that, that's got to be the largest.

Do you prepare in case of a natural disaster?
Q. This evening, I decided I should fill my water jugs just in case of a big earth quake. We had a 5.4 earth quake here 3 days ago and have been having minor aftershocks ever since. They have said midwestern earth quakes are poorly understood. What else should we do to prepare for natural disaster?
Asked by happydawg - Mon Apr 21 23:59:13 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Make sure you have a supply of batteries, flashlights and a portable radio or TV and your cell phone charger. Buy a first aid kit just for true emergencies. Have an evacuation plan who's going to meet where. You should have some non perishable food that you can eat cold. Don't forget a can opener. Collect all important papers and decide whether to take them with you or put them in a safe deposit box Take photos of your belongings for insurance purposes Decide what to do with your pets. Many shelters won't take them. Put some cash aside. There's usually a run on ATM machines. Swap out your emergency supplies at least once a year. If you have some warning, fill your gas tank (if you can afford it) That's hurricane season in FL!

Q. Why do they call the california fire a natural disaster when its not? It was caused by probably arson. Is this only so they can get the government to give them money?
Asked by Cincy G - Thu Oct 25 09:39:12 2007 - - 14 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Fire is a natural occurrence. That particular region has burned on fairly short and regular intervals for thousands of years. The fires historically have been intense enough to usually be stand replacing. Now there are houses being built in this area and we call it a disaster when the fire destroys them. It is like building a sandcastle on the beach and calling it a disaster when the tide comes in a washes it away. We know it is going to happen. Whether the fire was started by humans or lightning is irrelevant. The fire will happen one way or the other. We just call it a disaster when people build houses in a 'tinder box' and then they burn down.

Asked by Arin G - Mon Nov 16 15:06:26 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just about any natural disaster can cause a loss of data: even heavy rain can cause transformers to explode which can cause power surges, which can fry computers. Anything that can physically destroy a structure can cause fires or electrical damage, so that would include pretty much every natural disaster: earthquake, tsunami, hurricane, tornado, avalanche, blizzard, et cetera.

New Jersey: a storm caused a tree to fall and total my car. Does the state/city aid natural disaster damage?
Q. I had to pay out of my pocket to repair the car. I use it to get to work. I have insurance but my own insurance doesn't cover natural disasters. Does anyone know of the State helps out with natural disaster damages? I'm in Trenton, New Jersey and I recall that they might help, but I don't know if they will for car damage.
Asked by vince valentine - Wed Jul 30 12:31:35 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. I don't know if New Jersey is THAT different, but every state that I know of would cover this under comprehensive coverage. If you do not have this coverage than that is a different story. Since this IS something that would be covered through personal auto insurance, I can't imagine that there is a government agency that does it for *free*. ***EDIT*** I just did a quick check online and comprehensive coverage IS offered in NJ. This covers damages related to ...theft, flying debris, flood, lightning, explosion, windstorm!!, and others. I would call your agent to verify because it is not a true statement that natural disasters are not covered by insurance. Granted since COMP is an optional coverage, you may have elected to opt out of it.

A. Tablets that purify water(I forget name), a knife, matches in a waterproof container, a little tinder or small pieces of dry wood, a space blanket(they are very small and very warm), a can opener, half a gallon of fresh water, a pan, and the rest I would just fill with beef jerky and canned soup as all the previous things are all you really need to survive. Rope, small strips of linen, and alcohol is good if your thinking for first aid as well. Boil all your water, even if you still have running water at your house. The lines can break and be contaminated.

Q. Drought Causes? I need main causes of natural disaster for 10 points and contains some background information?

A. We already know that a drought occurs when not enough rain falls to the ground. However, water vapor condenses only if air rises into the colder regions of the atmosphere. If the air doesn t rise, then no rain will form. When there is high air pressure, air falls instead of rising. With the air pressing down in a high pressure zone, no currents of water vapor are carried upward. As a result, no condensation occurs, and little rain falls to earth. In addition, high-pressure areas push clouds and air currents downward and away, resulting in sunny, cloudless weather. Low-pressure systems see more cloudy, stormy weather. Usually, however, we experience both high- and low-pressure systems. It is normal for a high-pressure system to pass over… [cont.]
