A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e.g. flood, tornado, volcano eruption, earthquake, or landslide) that affects the environment, and leads to financial, environmental and/or human losses. The resulting loss depends on the capacity of the population to support or resist the disaster, and their resilience. This understanding is concentrated in the formulation: "disasters occur when hazards meet vulnerability." A natural hazard will hence never result in a natural disaster in areas without vulnerability, e.g. strong earthquakes in uninhabited areas. The term natural has consequently been disputed because the events simply are not hazards or disasters without human involvement.

Natural hazards

Main article: Natural hazard

A natural hazard is a threat of an event that will have a negative effect on people or the environment. Many natural hazards are related, e.g. earthquakes can result in tsunamis, drought can lead directly to famine and disease. A concrete example of the division between hazard and disaster is that the 1906 San Francisco earthquake was a disaster, whereas earthquakes are a hazard. Hazards are consequently relating to a future occurrence and disasters to past or current occurrences.

Have you or someone you know been in a natural disaster? What was your/their experience like?
Q. I'm researching on natural disasters for my thesis and would like to know what people experience and what they are feeling. It would be best to get first hand experiences, but if you know of someone who has been in a disaster, i am still interested in that too. Also, is there a forum or website that has people discussing their first hand experiences with natural disasters? Thanks

What is your Countries Worst Natural Disaster?
Q. Our country of Australia has bushfires, droughts, floods & storms. Our worst disasters are by far the big bushfires we have in summer. The worst one I can remember was in 1983, when a firestorm ripped through our state & Victoria killing 75 people. It cause millions of dollars worth of damage. Some of our bush fires develop into firestorms and they are so bad. What is the worst kind of natural disaster than your country has?

A. Tablets that purify water(I forget name), a knife, matches in a waterproof container, a little tinder or small pieces of dry wood, a space blanket(they are very small and very warm), a can opener, half a gallon of fresh water, a pan, and the rest I would just fill with beef jerky and canned soup as all the previous things are all you really need to survive. Rope, small strips of linen, and alcohol is good if your thinking for first aid as well. Boil all your water, even if you still have running water at your house. The lines can break and be contaminated.
