A natural disaster is the effect of a natural hazard (e.g. flood, tornado, volcanic eruption, earthquake, or landslide) that affects the environment, and leads to financial, environmental and/or human losses. The resulting loss depends on the capacity of the population to support or resist the disaster, and their resilience. This understanding is concentrated in the formulation: "disasters occur when hazards meet vulnerability." A natural hazard will hence never result in a natural disaster in areas without vulnerability, e.g. strong earthquakes in uninhabited areas. The term natural has consequently been disputed because the events simply are not hazards or disasters without human involvement. From Google News Search: "Natural disasters" What types of natural disasters, weather problems, etc. are common to the Portland/Salem, OR area? Q. We are planning on moving up there and would like to know what types of natural disasters/emergencies occur there. In Las Vegas we have flash flooding, drought, wind, and extreme heat. We don't really get tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, etc. Asked by Stevie - Wed Feb 20 10:47:52 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments A. Once a year we get tons of rain in the late fall and winter, beautiful summers, springs and early falls. Mild winters. We usually get 2 weeks of hot weather in July or August (95 to 100 degrees). Once in 10 years we get: An earthquake above 4.5 (we don't count the small ones) Hurricane wind storm which knocks down trees and causes a huge mess. Serious snowstorm - anything over 4" is considered a serious snowstorm here. Generally, it will snow but it melts when it hits the ground so it's just pretty to look at. Serious flooding - it's been at least 10 years since a major river has flooded. If you move here DON'T buy a house in a flood plain. Once every 25 years or so: A serious Volcano eruption (but we always get plenty of warning… [cont.] Answered by mollyflan - Sun Feb 24 00:08:55 2008 Why does God allow natural disasters to kill many innocent people? Q. Why did God design a world where natural disasters are so common? Asked by Black Jack - Sun Sep 7 12:54:08 2008 - - 23 Answers - 0 Comments A. God isn't a person. He's God. You, as a person, feel that you are the most imporant thing in your life. God just sees you as another organism in his universe. It's like an ant wondering why you stepped on his brother on your way to church. Answered by LM - Sun Sep 7 13:01:28 2008 Did Nostradamus predict any of these recent natural disasters?
Q. Did Nostradamus predit any of these huge natural disasters that have occured in 2010. There's been multiple megathrust earthquakes in various parts of the world, followed by devasting tsunamis and/or floods, a volcano eruption that pretty much crippled air traffic in that part of the world, severe weather causing multiple disasters and huge killer waves in the Mediterranean that struck an ocean liner. And this is just a few of the specifics. You would think he would have seen some of this in his prophecies. Asked by thatzmygramma - Fri May 7 00:22:04 2010 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. No, not a one. Nostradamus didn't really get anything accurate after about... oh... the 15th century. He probably wasn't writing for anyone other than his locals, anyway. Read about him, don't just read the fake "postdictions". Watch "The Man That Saw Tomorrow" if you want a giggle... although the prediction of Ted Kennedy winning the US Presidency in 1988 was a little sad, as Sen Kennedy's loss is still fresh. The program also predicts that California would slide into the ocean... in 1988, and that World War Three would start in 1999. Remember World War Three? 11 year ago? It was in ALL the papers. No one can "see" tomorrow. It is a causality absurdity. Earthquakes happen all the freaking time. They happen no more often just… [cont.] Answered by Faesson - Fri May 7 00:40:14 2010 From Yahoo Answer Search: "Natural disasters" |
